Sumnima and Paruhang

Sumnima and Paruhang are the supreme deities in the Kirat Rai religion. Sumnima is the mother goddess who represents feminine energy, fertility, and the nurturing aspect of nature. Paruhang is the father god who represents masculine energy, creation, and the sky. Together, they form the divine couple that governs the universe in Kirat cosmology.

The Divine Couple of Kirat Rai

Sumnima -The Mother Goddess Sumnima is the supreme female deity in Kirat Rai religion. She is associated with: 

• Mother Earth and fertility: Sumnima embodies the nurturing, life-giving aspect of nature. She is the goddess of agriculture, harvests, and the abundance of the earth.
• Women and motherhood: As the mother of all beings, Sumnima is especially revered by women. She is invoked during childbirth, marriage ceremonies, and other life events important to women.
• Traditional dress: Sumnima is often depicted wearing traditional Rai clothing — a wrapped skirt (pachhat), a blouse, and ornaments. She represents ideal feminine beauty and strength.
• Love and devotion: In Kirat mythology, Sumnima and Paruhang's love story is central. Sumnima's devotion to Paruhang is celebrated in songs and rituals.

 Paruhang - The Father God Paruhang is the supreme male deity. He is associated with: 

• The Sky and creation: Paruhang represents the sky, the sun, and the creative power of the universe. He is the god of creation and cosmic order.
• Music and arts: Paruhang is credited with creating the first flute/music, which he used to communicate with Sumnima. He represents the artistic and expressive dimensions of life.
• Men and leadership: Paruhang is the protector and provider. He is invoked in matters of leadership, protection, and masculine strength.

The Love Story 

The central myth of Sumnima and Paruhang tells how Paruhang, the sky god, created a beautiful flute and played it to attract Sumnima. Sumnima, hearing the beautiful music, came to the mountains to find its source. There, they met and fell in love. Their union represents the perfect balance of masculine and feminine energies and the harmony between sky (Paruhang) and earth (Sumnima). This myth is celebrated in the Sakela festival, where the circular dance represents the eternal dance of Sumnima and Paruhang -the cosmic dance of creation and sustenance.
